Building plans for a 10 bedroom extension to Alderney's Connaught have been given the green light
Building plans for a 10 bedroom extension to Alderney's Connaught Care Home have been given the green light to help meet the needs of the Island's ageing population.
The States owned Connaught, which sits in the centre of St Anne, has 25 full care residential rooms and 14 in its neighbouring sheltered accommodation facility, the Jubilee.
There is now regularly a waiting list for rooms.
In Alderney 35 per cent of the population is over 60 and demand for elderly care is set to increase steeply over coming years.
The States of Alderney has agreed to spend a chunk of its £5.4 million capital budget for 2019 on the three storey extension.
Liz Bowskill, manager of the Connaught Care Home, welcomed their decision. "For the past four months the Connaught has been completely full and we don't expect that to change much over coming years" she said. "We have an ageing population. Of course our aim is to keep people in their own homes for as long as they want to be there and the new facility will also help us extend day care services. Our vision is for the Connaught to be a centre of excellence for the care of older adults. I'm really excited that this is going forward."
